PERSONALITY: "I'd rather be myself until the very last moment. Even if it means dying at the hands of a monster... I don't want to let this game beat me. I won't let it happen."

When first meeting Asuna, everyone is usually struck stupid by her beauty. She’s gorgeous enough to have stalkers, fanclubs, and become incredibly popular in the world of «Sword Art Online». I’m talking idol status. The main protagonist thinks she’s way too beautiful to even be real and wonders if she’s an NPC and comments about her winsome looks at multiple points throughout the series. However, Asuna is more than just a pretty face (or voice, according to Kirito). She has a kind, good, and courageous heart to match; the social etiquette and manners of a princess due to being a rich girl raised in a traditional family; and enough determination and spirit to bulldoze head-on through any challenge or obstacle that stands in her way.

Although a lot of the time Asuna's big heart and the fact that she cares about others is hidden behind a straight-laced warrior, she's not unkind. It just takes a bit longer to get to her softer side because she's built up walls during her stay in SAO for her own protection. She's determined to beat all of the floors as quickly and as efficiently as possible and that's her primary goal. Of course, she has other small goals along the way like taking a bath every day, if possible. She's a bit more soft towards girls because they're rare in SAO and because she went to an All Girl's School. When meeting Kizmel, a female NPC Dark Elf, Asuna has no problems taking a bath or sleeping next to her. When in the same situation with Kirito, she makes him stand guard while she bathes and draws an invisible line he can't cross while they sleep. Once you're her friend she can be affectionate and nurturing and extremely protective. Her walls come down. Friends and non-friends alike do get a taste of her mischievous side in her playful humor and sharp wit. She likes teasing Kirito on occasion about the fact that he tends to wear black too much early on in their relationship.

She’s reckless enough to put her life on the line for other's protection. The fact is that she can’t stand death in SAO nor can she stand not being able to do anything. When a party is suffering from fighting a boss, Asuna rushes in to save them without thought. Seeing others dying so pointlessly is unacceptable when she tries so hard to calculate ways to avoid losses and ensure victory. Not only that, but any death decreases the chance of beating the game and setting everyone free -- that is the ultimate goal. Judging by these acts and Asuna’s previous behavior when she first started SAO (fighting without for four days straight in a dungeon full of monsters to get stronger) she is incredibly chivalrous. Yet Asuna’s self-image of herself isn’t necessarily a positive thing. Asuna struggles to find her place in the world since she’s been so focused on school for so long and nothing else. She doesn’t see herself as strong (or as strong as she hopes and aims to be) and often tries to better herself while hiding any weakness she might have. Which is interesting to note because she has given Kirito the advice that he should talk to people when he's upset or depressed. Despite that, she has a bit of a temper and sensitive heart so she can’t always hide those negative emotions. Okay, a pretty big temper if antagonized. She acts rashly during those temper flares, throwing an apple at Kirito's head when he enters her room for no reason other than she just didn't want him in her room (she apologizes after though). She isn’t afraid to beat you down or threaten if you really piss her off either. A good way to make her angry besides attacking people she cares about, or just being a pervert, is to make decisions for her. At that point her pride rears its head.

With that hot-blooded type of temper, Asuna is a passionate young woman with a lot of pride. When she has goals, she doesn’t allow anyone or anything to get in her way in order to complete it. She becomes a rather serious, a little too serious at times, girl with laser focus. This is one of the main reasons she became the sub-leader of the strongest guild in SAO, Knights of Blood, and a top player with renowned skills. Kirito calls her “A Floor-Clearing Badass”. Along with her extreme determination and willpower, Asuna has the battle experience and strategic know-how to think of battle formations and attack patterns on the fly that lead to victory. She is incredibly smart and her placement at the top of the class in school, before the SAO incident, and good marks shows she has book smarts along with street smarts. Not to mention plenty of competitiveness in her to be the best and win. The KOB guild looked to Asuna’s leadership and take charge attitude during meetings to come up with counter-strategy against formidable bosses with their lives in her hands. She’s a quick study, able to pick up on the mechanics of how to play an MMO despite the fact she was a total beginner and had never played an MMO before then. Her talents and potential to do anything she wants if she sets her mind to it shine when she was just a Level 10 Player.

Because of her intelligence, Asuna favors reason and logic over following your heart. But she wouldn't be a heroine of a shounen novel if she didn't follow her heart, too. Because she's usually a reasonable individual, her demeanor is calmer than you might expect from someone who will inexplicably get mad at someone because she's embarrassed or that she's trying to be a hero that jumps headlong into danger to save someone. Kirito suffers that temper quite a lot when the two of them are together on the first floors of Aincrad. However when the first raid of SAO is in chaos because they're blaming Kirito for a player's death, Asuna steps in and calmly points out that without his knowledge as a beta tester they would be in a worse position instead of joining in the group blaming him. After Kirito is coined with the villainous nickname 'Beater', Asuna tags along with him without a care of how people perceive her. Rather, she envies the strength he showed because it's detrimental when it comes to surviving SAO and wants to learn from it. She even learns to depend on it.

Asuna’s life had been a series of battles starting from a Kindergarten entrance exam and on towards middle school but she moved forward by overcoming them. She lived by a routine and set goals for the future and only focused on that; It was a lifestyle that was used in SAO to beat the game as quickly as possible as well. This can sometimes make her seem a bit single-minded. Sometimes she forgets about people's feelings when she has that goal in mind. A lot of the guild members were told to follow the rules in order to prioritize beating the game by Asuna herself and were pushed very hard. People in her class also tended to think of her as too serious and not having enough personality to have any good stories to tell. Her relationship with her family is also not very fulfilling since she's so focused on staying at the top of the class and making her mother proud. Not only that, but her family was never around either. In a way, she doesn't have any true friendships or healthy relationships in her life until she enters SAO. The relationships she maintains at first are those from people she can learn from and purely to gain knowledge. Even Kirito, her partner, is someone she hangs around because she wants to learn how to become stronger by his example and knowledge. But as time goes on, she bonds with Kirito more deeply and learns to trust his judgement and his ability. Their relationship grows and she confides in him about her feelings when they're alone.

All those serious qualities paint the picture of a calm, polite, and level-headed leader and Asuna usually portrays herself as that. However, she is still a normal girl at heart. There are two things she is absolutely passionate about and that’s cooking and baths. She even enters Kirito’s room upon first meeting him when he mentions he has a bathroom and a tub to use because she wants a bath so badly. She’s a bit materialistic and girly; she bought multiple outfits in SAO, spent 4 million col (money in SAO) on a nice house, and helped her friend Liz find a costume for her shop to attract more customers. She can get a bit shy too though, although that usually translates into her getting mad about something or other. Once she gets close to others, she tends to show a bit more of her playful and childish side. People are affected greatly by the warmth and care she exudes. She's slightly spoiled and can get dorky over something that's cute. Small animals and young children are doted over indulgently because a world outside of her small reality is somewhat foreign to her. Especially something like a virtual world with fantastical sights. There were numerous occasions where Asuna abandoned her serious disposition to spin around in a grove of trees or stare up in awe at an Inn that was inside a hollowed out tree.

That childish side is also terrified of things in the horror category, particularly of the paranormal sort. Any of the horror-themed dungeons in Aincrad she made excuses to not be a part of. Even if Asuna seems like a earnest, well-mannered lady at a distance once you get close to her it’s easy to see that she is soft and caring and much more than she makes herself out to be. Although she is a girl who values efficiency and strength, she also secretly enjoys the small things in life. More than anything, she cares about other people and their well-being. At her core Asuna has the heart of a lion – one who’s bold and fierce but also loves just as fiercely.

ABILITIES: Asuna's weapon of choice is a rapier and it's perfect for her speed type. Her attack style is focused on accuracy and striking at critical points with it. She goes head to head with the protagonist Kirito and even beats him during a competition to see who can defeat 50 Wind Wasps first even if Kirito's weapon is stronger and he's at a higher level. Her rapier isn't as strong as Kirito's «Elucidator» but her style makes up for it. The tip of her sword moves so quickly that Kirito compares it to that of a meteor and it's difficult to follow. She's so fast with her rapier and on foot that she's earned the title "The Flash" among her peers in SAO and within her guild KoB. It's canon that her speed is so incredible that it has basically broken the system and exceeded the limitations it has set. She's able to cross a 5km distance in five minutes compared to the normal hour. Few match Asuna in terms of movement.

In SAO, players are able to use abilities called "Sword Skills." They're system assisted moves that are much more powerful than any normal attack the player could do on their own. There are many different skills and as their weapon proficiency levels up, they gain more skills. Asuna's skills mainly consist of thrusting attacks since her weapon is a rapier but there are still combo sets available to her since she's at a higher level. The first Sword Skill in the rapier category is "Linear" and the most powerful is "Flashing Penetrator."

Sword Skills aren't the only abilities available to players. As each player levels up, they open up new slots for skills to choose from. With her "One-Handed Rapier" skill slot Asuna also has "Acrobatics", "First Aid", "Sprint", and "Cooking" to name a few. They do exactly as they are titled. Asuna is able to perform acrobatics, first aid, sprint, and cook. The slot she's put the most time and energy into besides her sword play is cooking. A lot of time is dedicated to analyzing how different food ingredients interact with each other in order to create flavors that weren't simulated in SAO. It's a pretty useless skill in battle, in all honesty, but she loves cooking and she's well on her way to mastering the skill. Players can check their stats of those skills, access their inventory, as well as fiddle with options and their armor in their menus. The storage acts as a hammerspace and has a weight limit.

For having never played an MMO in her life to being part of the 10% of SAO's best players that consisted of mostly beta testers, Asuna handles and adapts to situations out of her control well. Although a lot of her potential has to do with her spirit and determination, she also has great ambition and smarts. Without her intelligence, Asuna wouldn't have been able to pick-up the basics of an MMO so quickly. Besides that, she was at the top of her class in real life and aced any test thrown at her so she has a lot of knowledge at her disposal. Kirito turned to the capable Asuna when he was stuck on something. She has a ton of battle experience from being on the front lines for two years as well and spent a lot of time studying every aspect of SAO. To the point that she memorized the move sets of other weapons in order to counter them effectively.

That battle experience and brain sets her apart when it comes to the group that clears dungeons so she holds the position as sub-leader. Though her previous approach to rallying the group together was to be very blunt and serious, she still had enough charisma and assertiveness that she was respected and looked up to.

Without all that speed and skill with a rapier, Asuna is still a slender girl. She doesn't have any bulging muscles despite high STR stats. That sort of thing doesn't carry over from the avatar to real life. She's about as physically strong though as your average person would be if she's outside the system. Her armor choice didn't make up for it either. Since she's a speed type, she doesn't wear anything heavy in fear that it would lower her speed. So she's about as vulnerable as someone not wearing any armor at all. All she has is a light metal breastplate on her chest.

Beyond physical weaknesses, her pride can also be used against her. If she's challenged at something, then she's hard-pressed to ignore that challenge. She's a competitive girl and inherently wants to fight strong players to test her abilities or learn from them. That pride is gained from being a top-level player in SAO and in her own abilities as a swordswoman. However, her pride isn't infallible since paranormal and other scary things can get her hesitate or, worst case, run away screaming.

People's lives being in danger could be used against her too, especially her friends. For a girl that had nothing but everything in the real world, she treasures true friendships. She wants to be a protector instead of being protected so there's no question she would come to the aid of someone who asked it.
